Wine Week 215: Wynners are grinners

April 1st, 2011

We’ve been meaning to do this one for a while, and there’s no good reason why we haven’t. So while the Wynn’s Black Label Cabernet is the last wine in the episode, it was easily our first pick to talk about this week.

We also check out a lovely drink-now Chardonnay from Red Hill Estate, and a great bargain red blend from Langhorne Creek producter, Metala.

This week’s recommendations are:

  • Red Hill Estate Chardonnay 2008 ($18-$19)
  • Metala Cabernet Shiraz Malbec 2009 ($12-$14)
  • Wynns Coonawarra Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 ($22-35)

Wine Week 214: Grand (prix) wines

March 25th, 2011

The Grand Prix is on in our hometown of Melbourne this week, and while we record the F1 cars head out for a bit of practice.

The first across the line is a M. Chapoutier Côtes du Rhône that is a reliable everyday driver. Next is the Radenti from Freycinet, a high end sparkling that is a proven endurance performer. Taking out third place is a newer model from a stable with a host of followers, the Moppa Shiraz by Kalleske.

This week’s recommendations are:

  • M. Chapoutier Côtes du Rhône 2008 ($16-$18)
  • Freycient Radenti 2000 ($55-$60)
  • Kalleske Moppa 2009 ($25-28)

Wine Week 213: The winner is…

March 18th, 2011

The lucky person who wins our Best Dozen of 2010 is announced this week! While we get ready to read out the name we check out a couple of wines that have a strong tie with the Best Dozen.

The first is the Heathcote Estate Shiraz. While it hasn’t appeared in the Best Dozen yet, the winemaker is the same as for the Yabby Lake pinot that did make it. We also feature a Ben Glaetzer wine, although this time not the winning Wallace, but it’s more expensive sibling the Anaperenna. In between we also look at a Chardonnay from Margaret River producer Flametree.

This week’s recommendations are:

  • Heathcote Estate Shiraz 2008 ($40-$44)
  • Flametree Chardonnay 2009 ($26-$28)
  • Ben Glaetzer Anaperenna 2009 ($48-50)

Wine Week 212: This wine is tops!

March 11th, 2011

Most people who are wine buffs know about the winery Clonakilla. Tim Kirk, the winemaker there, is famous for his Shiraz-Viognier. But if you don’t have the $100+ for a bottle of that why not try the Hilltops Shiraz they make that comes in a much more weekday friendly price and still impresses.

We also check out a pair of wines from two of McLaren Vale’s best know wineries; the Lost Watch Riesling from Wirra Wirra and the d’Arry’s Original from d’Arenberg.

This week’s recommendations are:

  • Wirra Wirra Lost Watch Riesling 2010 ($16-$19)
  • Clonakilla Hilltops Shiraz 2009 ($25-$28)
  • d’Arenberg d’Arry’s Original 2008 ($13-18)

We also check up on some old family wines, the Tahbilk Marsanne and Oliver’s Taranga Vineyards Shiraz – both of which have history dating back more than a century and a half!
