Wine Week 223: Why stop now?

June 3rd, 2011

Yes, Chardonnay Day was last week. But why stop now? Especially when you’ve got a Chardonnay as good as the 2008 Voyager Estate from Margaret River to enjoy!

It’s been a while since we looked at a Zinfandel, but Brad’s got one from McLaren Vale that’s great value and great drinking. Danny checks out the newest release Pinot Noir from storied brand Heemskerk, a great drop from Tasmania.

This week’s recommendations are:

  • Voyager Estate Chardonnay 2008 ($38-$42)
  • Kangarilla Road Black St. Peters Zinfandel 2008 ($27-30)
  • Heemskerk Derwent Valley Pinot Noir 2008 ($55-60)

Wine Week 165: Australian Rules.

March 26th, 2010

We’re ready for the start of the 2010 Australia Football League (AFL) season, but before we head off to the MCG to watch Essendon take on Geelong we thought we might check out a couple of wines.

We bounce the ball by looking at a wine that impressed at our recent tasting: The Clonakilla Riesling. A lovely drop that reminds Danny of sherbet. Brad looks a performer that’s proven itself on the big stage: The Cape Mentelle Zinfandel. Big, bold and brash but with a legion of supporters. Before the final siren Danny checks out a Durif from Rutherglen producer Scion. It might have been a while since the grape was at the top of the ladder, but this might be a breakout season that sees fans jumping on the bandwagon.

Want to join Danny & Brad in the Wine Week AFL footy tipping competition? Sure you do! Well, come on and be part of it!

This week’s recommendations are:

  • Clonakilla Riesling 2009 ($23-$26)
  • Cape Mentelle Zinfandel 2007 ($50-$55)
  • Scion Durif 2006 ($28-$32)

Wine Week 39: The A to Z of Italian varieties.

September 21st, 2007

This week we look at three Italian grape varieties in a Wine Week special. The first comes from the white grape arneis. The second may be the best known of the Australian produced Italians in the form of the Chianti grape sangiovese. And the final wine comes from a grape popular not only in Italy, but California as well, zinfandel.

In this episode we recommend:

  • Garry Crittenden i Arneis 2004 ($16-18)
  • Coriole Sangiovese 2006 ($16-19)
  • Cape Mentelle Zinfandel 2005 ($35-40)
