Wine Week 135: We rate them, and so does Halliday.

August 14th, 2009

It’s the one book that serious Aussie wine geeks look forward to every year: The James Halliday Australian Wine Companion. The 2010 edition has hit the bookshelves and we’ve had a quick glance to see what Australia’s most renowned wine critic has given top marks to that we’re also fans of. So as well as giving James’ book a look, we check out the Brown Brothers Patricia Noble Riesling and the Teusner Joshua, two wines/wineries that fall into the ‘mutual admiration’ category.

This week’s recommendations are:

  • James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion 2010 ($30-35)
  • Brown Brothers Patricia Noble Riesling 2006 ($30-35)
  • Teusner Joshua 2007 ($20-$25)

Wine Week 125: For bookworms and wine lovers.

June 5th, 2009

We’ve recommended a few books over the last couple of years, but never one so well aimed at our audience as the Big Red Wine Book. Written for both wine lovers and the average Joe, this is a brilliant reference for anyone who loves a drop of the red stuff and can’t be bothered with pretentious wine writing. We also check out a couple of wines that rate highly in the book including a Tahbilk Cabernet and a Thorn-Clarke shiraz. Both great wines at great prices – and what more could you want from a wine or a wine recommendation?

This week’s recommendations are:

  • The Big Red Wine Book – by Campbell Mattinson and Gary Walsh ($25)
  • Tahbilk Cabernet Sauvignon 2005 ($13-18)
  • Thorn-Clarke Shotfire shiraz 2007 ($18-20)

Wine Week 104: A brand new year.

January 9th, 2009

2009 is here, and in our first episode for the new year we offer a couple of wine suggestions as well as a great wine book. If you’re late with a present, or maybe got some cash for Christmas then Campbell Mattinson’s book “Why the French hate us” is just what you need. Exploring the wine industry in Australia and written in a brilliantly entertainly style, this is a winner for the wine lover! Getting back into wine, we look at a Cabernet from a big Barossa Valley producer which is super value and a top end Semillon from the Hunter Valley.

This week’s recommendations are:

  • Campbell Mattinson’s “Why the French hate us” ($29)
  • Grant Burge Cameron Vale cabernet sauvignon 2006 ($18-20)
  • Tyrrell’s Vat 1 Hunter semillon 2002 ($40-46)
