Wine Week 197: Ask for it by name.

November 5th, 2010

What’s in a name? When it comes to these wines, quite a lot! The Torzi Matthews Schist Rock Shiraz might not be the most simple name to pronounce, but it definitely ticks all the boxes in terms of quality and price for us.

At Kooyong Estate and Crittenden Estate on the Mornington Peninsula they each offer various wines from different ranges. We check out the Estate Chardonnay from Kooyong and the Los Hermanos Tempranillo from Crittenden to see how they stack up.

This week’s recommendations are:

  • Torzi Matthews Schist Rock Shiraz 2009 ($17-19)
  • Kooyong Estate Estate Chardonnay 20077 ($30-$32)
  • Crittenden Estate Los Hermanos Tempranillo 2008 ($24-27)

Wine Week 188: What’s the Story?

September 3rd, 2010

“Virtual wineries” are on the rise. One of the best of these is The Story. Sourcing grapes from the Grampians region in Victoria and making wine in the outer suburbs of Melbourne, the one thing that hasn’t changed from the old methods is that great wine is still the aim.

We also check out the Running With Bulls Tempranillo that comes in at bargain prices and wows with flavour and style. And to mark the beginning of spring down under we check out one of the very best Rosés, the Farr Rising Saignée.

This week’s recommendations are:

  • Running With Bulls Tempranillo 2009 ($18-20)
  • The Story Grampians Shiraz 2008 ($20-22)
  • Farr Rising Saignée 2009 ($25-$27)

Wine Week 148: Pondering wine choices.

November 13th, 2009

This week we look at three wines that might not be your first thought when looking for a wine this week. The first is an interesting vineyard blend from Pondalowie, made from Shiraz, Cabernet and Tempranillo. The next is an “off-dry” semillon from Andrew Thomas in the Hunter Valley, a wine with a touch of sweetness that’s really hitting its straps. Lastly we check out the new Shiraz from Mike Press, a wine selling at amazingly low prices given the quality of fruit inside!

This week’s recommendations are:

  • Pondalowie Vineyard Blend 2005 ($18-20)
  • Andrew Thomas Wines Six-Degrees Semillon 2009 ($20-$22)
  • Mike Press Shiraz 2008 ($12-14)

Wine Week 92: It takes different strokes to move the world.

October 3rd, 2008

Now the world don’t move to the beat of just one drum… So this week we look at three wines that aren’t exactly standard everyday wines. The first is a tempranillo, graciano blend with style, attitude and a great story behind it. The white we look at this week is a pinot gris from a producer well known for getting the best from the grape. And finally we look at a true Italian chianti which should be available around the world, including Italy!

In this episode we recommend:

  • Kid You Not Dashing Master Huntley 2004 ($23-25)
  • T’Gallant Tribute pinot gris 2007 ($30-35)
  • Gabbiano Chianti Classico 2006 ($22-25)
