Wine Week 235: Rosés and moustaches.

November 4th, 2011

Soon we’ll all be drinking Rosé… in fact as November 10 is Rosé Revolution many of us will be looking for a light pink dry drop to celebrate the modern version of rosé.

We look at two offerings ready for next Thursday; the De Bortoli Pinot Noir Rosé and the Chateau De Sours Bordeaux Rosé. We also look at a Pinot Noir from Adelaide Hills producer Nepenthe.

You can also help Danny as he tries to raise money for Movember! Visit http://mobro.co/DannyBishop to be part of the effort to improve men’s health!

This week’s recommendations are:

  • De Bortoli Pinot Noir Rosé 2011 ($22-$25)
  • Chateau de Sours Bordeaux Rosé 2010 ($18-$20)

Wine Week 202: Grey, white and pink.

December 10th, 2010

Some people put a lot of emphasis on the colour of wine. Certainly the Wolf Blass name is linked with colour, and this week we have a look at one of their Grey Label wines that impressed us at a recent tasting.

We hope that Oprah’s visitors to the Tyrrell’s cellar door this week loved the great Hunter white Semillon as much as we do! And rounding out the week we look at a dry Rosé from Port Philip estate that is very light pink.

This week’s recommendations are:

  • Wolf Blass Grey Label Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 ($27-$30)
  • Tyrrell’s WInes Belford Semillon 2005 ($22-$25)
  • Port Philip Estate Salasso Rosé ($18-20)

Wine Week 192: Around Rutherglen (and beyond).

October 1st, 2010

Last week Danny was up around Rutherglen. While the region is definitely best known for its stunning fortifieds and bold durifs, Danny brought back a couple of wines that break the mould.

The first is a rosé from Scion that’s bone dry despite being made from a grape more normally associated with sweet whites. Then there is the Stanton & Killeen Prince Reserva, a wine made for the table with grapes normally associated with Portuguese fortified wines.

In between Brad takes us over to the over side of Australia with a great value Shiraz from Xabregas in the Great Southern region of WA.

This week’s recommendations are:

  • Scion Vineyard Rosé 2010 ($18-20)
  • Xabregas Shiraz 2008 ($20-22)
  • Stanton & Killeen The Prince Reserva 2008 ($40-$45)

Wine Week 188: What’s the Story?

September 3rd, 2010

“Virtual wineries” are on the rise. One of the best of these is The Story. Sourcing grapes from the Grampians region in Victoria and making wine in the outer suburbs of Melbourne, the one thing that hasn’t changed from the old methods is that great wine is still the aim.

We also check out the Running With Bulls Tempranillo that comes in at bargain prices and wows with flavour and style. And to mark the beginning of spring down under we check out one of the very best Rosés, the Farr Rising Saignée.

This week’s recommendations are:

  • Running With Bulls Tempranillo 2009 ($18-20)
  • The Story Grampians Shiraz 2008 ($20-22)
  • Farr Rising Saignée 2009 ($25-$27)

Wine Week 161: A midsummer night’s dream.

February 26th, 2010

The hot days down under aren’t done with just yet. And vintage, when vineyards are picking their grapes, is in full force too. With both those things going on at once we look at a sparkling wine from Blue Pyrenees which is picked in the cool of the night to make sure they get the best from their grapes.

We also look at a super bargain priced Rosé from Angoves great for warmer days, and a classic quaffer from Pepperjack perfect for matching with lamb on the BBQ.

This week’s recommendations are:

  • Angoves Nine Rows Rosé 2009 ($8-14)
  • Blue Pyrenees Midnight Cuvée 2002 ($22-$26)
  • Pepperjack Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 ($18-$23)

Wine Week 154: For starters…

January 8th, 2010

2009 is done, and we’ve started a new decade. And what better way to kick things off than with three bottles you might open at the start of a an afternoon or evening with good friends and good food.

But, not everyone starts off with a wine… so this week we kick things off with that most Aussie of aperitifs, a beer. But not just any beer! This is brewed on the grounds at one of the great wineries of the Clare Valley, Knappstein. We also look at a lovely rosé from Yering Station that isn’t just ‘cotton candy in the mouth’. And we round out the starting field with a great, inexpensive, bottle of bubbles from Jansz.

Don’t forget you can still win one of our Best Dozen of 2009. You’ll go into the draw if you’re a subscriber. If you’re a Twitter follower or a fan on Facebook then you’ve got another chance to win! Retweeting on twitter, or posting on your facebook wall with a link to the competition will get you another entry too! There are heaps of ways to give yourself the best possible shot at taking home one of the Best Dozen of 09 packs!

This week’s recommendations are:

  • Knappstein E.B. Premium Larger ($13-17 per 4 pack)
  • Yering Station E.D. Rosé 2008 ($18-20)
  • Jansz Premium Non Vintage Cuvée ($20-$23)

Wine Week 149: Cool wines for hot times

November 20th, 2009

It’s been hot, really hot, around the south eastern part of Australia recently. Not just warm, but ear-wax meltingly hot! So we thought we’d offer up some wines that go well when the mercury is busting through the top of the thermometer. The All Saints Moscato is light on alcohol, with a light, bright fizz and a touch of sweetness and goes beautifully chilled down or even served over chipped ice. Wirra Wirra’s Mrs. Wigley Grenache Rosé might be your style if you’re not after a white but the day is just a bit too warm for a big red. And to round things out, a Pinot Noir is the obvious choice for a red during the hot months, and Paringa Estate’s Estate Pinot Noir is one of the very, very best you can buy.

This week’s recommendations are:

  • All Saints Moscato 2009 ($16-18)
  • Wirra Wirra Mrs. Wigley Grenache Rosé 2009 ($16-$19)
  • Paringa Estate Estate Pinot Noir 2008 ($55-60)
