Wine Week 235: Rosés and moustaches.

November 4th, 2011

Soon we’ll all be drinking Rosé… in fact as November 10 is Rosé Revolution many of us will be looking for a light pink dry drop to celebrate the modern version of rosé.

We look at two offerings ready for next Thursday; the De Bortoli Pinot Noir Rosé and the Chateau De Sours Bordeaux Rosé. We also look at a Pinot Noir from Adelaide Hills producer Nepenthe.

You can also help Danny as he tries to raise money for Movember! Visit http://mobro.co/DannyBishop to be part of the effort to improve men’s health!

This week’s recommendations are:

  • De Bortoli Pinot Noir Rosé 2011 ($22-$25)
  • Chateau de Sours Bordeaux Rosé 2010 ($18-$20)
  • Nepenthe Pinot Noir 2010 ($18-$25)

Wine Week 229: Yellow gold.

August 5th, 2011

As fans of Cadel Evans we couldn’t let his win in the Tour de France go by unacknowledged. So Danny found a wine to suit the theme that’s one of Australia’s best – just like Cadel.

We also check out a Coonawarra Cabernet from Leconfield and a lovely complex Pinot Noir from Mornington Peninsula producers Moorooduc Estate.

This week’s recommendations are:

  • DeBortoli Nobel One 2007 ($28-$33 – 375ml)
  • Leconfield Cabernet Sauvignon 2009 ($26-29)
  • Moorooduc Estate McIntyre Vineyard Pinot Noir 2009 ($30-35)

Wine Week 227: Something old and something new.

July 22nd, 2011

Most weeks we talk about wines that you’ll find if you head to a wine retailer this weekend. Our first two wines fall into that category: the Oliver’s Taranga 2011 Fiano and the Tollana 2008 Pinot Noir.

Danny also talks about an older bottle from his cellar, a 10 year old Cabernet from Victorian Pyrenees winery Dalwhinnie that’s ripe for a special opening.

This week’s recommendations are:

  • Oliver’s Taranga Fiano 2011 ($22-$24)
  • Tollana Pinot Noir 2008 ($29-32)
  • Dalwhinnie Moonambel Cabernet 2001 ($40-65 on the secondary market)

Wine Week 225: Three ripping cheap wines.

July 1st, 2011

There’s an old song by Aussie band Cold Chisel that includes the line “Cheap wine and a three day growth”. It brings to mind some not so good inexpensive tipples.

But this week we’ve tracked down three cheap wines that won’t leave you struggling to get out of the bathtub. We kick off with a Thorn Clarke Riesling, move on to an Oakridge Pinot Noir and finish up with a Shiraz from Hardy’s with a name like a number plate.

This week’s recommendations are:

  • Thorn Clarke Sandpiper Riesling 2010 ($12-$15)
  • Oakridge Over the Shoulder Pinot Noir 2010 ($16-18)
  • Hardy’s HRB|D641 Shiraz 2007 ($19-22)

Wine Week 223: Why stop now?

June 3rd, 2011

Yes, Chardonnay Day was last week. But why stop now? Especially when you’ve got a Chardonnay as good as the 2008 Voyager Estate from Margaret River to enjoy!

It’s been a while since we looked at a Zinfandel, but Brad’s got one from McLaren Vale that’s great value and great drinking. Danny checks out the newest release Pinot Noir from storied brand Heemskerk, a great drop from Tasmania.

This week’s recommendations are:

  • Voyager Estate Chardonnay 2008 ($38-$42)
  • Kangarilla Road Black St. Peters Zinfandel 2008 ($27-30)
  • Heemskerk Derwent Valley Pinot Noir 2008 ($55-60)

Wine Week 220: Here comes the rain again.

May 13th, 2011

As we sat down to film this week’s episode the rain started falling outside. No shock there, as Melbourne has been wet for months it seems. And when it’s been raining this much you can’t just stick to the usual suspects of big reds.

So this week we match the rain up with a Riesling from Larry Cherubino, a cool climate Shiraz from Plunkett Fowles and an inexpensive Pinot from Garry Mills at Jamsheed. Who needs sun with wines like these?!

This week’s recommendations are:

  • Ad Hoc Wallflower Riesling 2010 ($18-$20)
  • Ladies who Shoot their Lunch Shiraz 2009 ($28-32)
  • Jamsheed Pepé le Pinot 2010 ($18-$20)

February 25th, 2011

We also check up on the latest vintages of the Penley Phoenix Cabernet Sauvignon and the Stonier Pinot Noir.

This week’s recommendations are:

  • Peter Lehmann Margaret Barossa Semillon ($32-$35)
  • Stonier Pinot Noir 2009 ($23-$28)

The first a brilliant Shiraz from Bests Wines, a winery that has suffered like so many in the floods that have been so heartbreaking across the country. Brad looks at a Pinot Noir that he picked up on recent trip down to Tasmania and Danny talks about the Sorrenberg Chardonnay.

  • Bests Bin 0 Shiraz 2008 ($62-$65)
  • Freycinet Louis Pinot Noir 2009 ($25-$28)

Wine Week 203: What to wish for these holidays.

December 17th, 2010

What more could you wish for this Christmas than great friends, family and wine? Our families know that making us happy is as simple as finding a great Riesling for a gift, and the Knappstein Hand Picked Riesling certainly hits the spot.

When Christmas dinner comes round Danny suggests you could match that baked ham with the Bay of Fires Pinot Noir. Yum! And when your wine gets called one of the top 10 in the world you might feel all your Christmases have come at once, just like the happy boys and girls from Schild Estate.

This week’s recommendations are:

  • Knappstein Hand Picked Riesling 2010 ($16-$20)
  • Bay of Fires Pinot Noir 2009 ($28-$30)
  • Schild Estate Shiraz 2008 ($18-20)
