The iPhone is the market leader in smartphones in Australia. James Halliday is the market leader in wine guides in Australia. When you put the two together you’ve got the best iPhone app for fans of Australian wine!

As well as reviewing the Halliday Wine Companion app Danny and Brad check out one of Henschke’s range of Rieslings and one of the very best fortified wines from Rutherglen, the Morris Old Premium.

This week’s recommendations are:

  • Morris Old Premium Rare Muscat ($60-65)
  • Henschke Julius Riesling 2011 ($30-$33)
  • James Halliday Wine Companion iPhone app ($14.99)

Wine Week 181: An iPhone app for wine… buffs.

July 16th, 2010

A while back we looked at an iPhone app that was perfect for casual wine drinkers. But what if, like us, you’re a bit more than casual about your wine cellar? We check out the new iPhone app Vinoteka, which has been designed to meet the needs of bigger cellars and those who want to track everything possible about their wine collection both on the iPhone and on a Mac.

We also look at the Elizabeth Semillon from Mount Pleasant, which Danny is glad is now under screw cap. Brad looks at a bargain Shiraz from Gramps that was picking up awards last year, but is still in the shops today. Who said a wine glut was all bad news!?

This week’s recommendations are:

  • Mount Pleasant Elizabeth Semillon 2006 ($10-$16)
  • Gramps Shiraz 2006 ($15-$20)
  • Vinoteka iPhone App ($6US-$8AU)

Wine Week 131: Wines and iPhones

July 17th, 2009

Keeping track of what wines you have at home, plus what wines you’ve drunk and want to have again, can be a bit of a hassle. But this week we look at an iPhone application designed to help you with this exact problem. We also look at two wines that we’d be happy to add to the Cellar iPhone application. The first is an Eden Valley riesling from Grant Burge, a winemaker who knows to look beyond their Barossa home for the white grape. We also check out a shiraz from a producer showing some great handy work, Cookoothama.

This week’s recommendations are:

  • Grant Burge Thorn Eden Valley Riesling 2008 ($13-15)
  • Cookoothama Shiraz 2007 ($13-15)
  • Cellar iPhone application ($0.99-1.2 – [release special])
