Wine Week 134: All in the family.

August 7th, 2009

This week we look at three wines with a definite family theme. The first is the Tulum Chardonnay from Willow Creek, a small winery on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula which hosted the wedding of members of Danny’s extended family a few years back. The next wine is the Kalleske Clarry’s red, named after the grandfather of current winemaker, Troy Kalleske. Our final wine is the Zema Estate Family Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, a ripper drop using only the best fruit from the great 2005 Coonawarra vintage.

This week’s recommendations are:

  • Willow Creek Tulum Chardonnay 2007 ($30-40)
  • Kalleske Clarry’s Red Shiraz-Grenache 2008 ($16-20)
  • Zema Estate Family Selection Cabernet Sauvignon 2005 ($40-$45)

Wine Week 115: You’ve got to be in it to win(e) it!

March 27th, 2009

It’s that time of year again when the Aussie Rules football kicks off. And we’ve got a tipping comp that could win you half a dozen great wines from Kalleske. As well, of course, we look at three wines worth taking a punt on. We look at a white good enough for Brad to serve at his wedding last year. Our first red is a big, bold grenache from a producer in tip-top form. Our final wine is a lesser know producer kicking goals with top of the table Barossa fruit.

Wine Week 105: Gold medal bargains.

January 16th, 2009

How much would you expect to pay for an Australian Shiraz which won gold at one of the most well respected wine shows? How about under $10! The De Bortoli winery continues to impress across the range and this bargain red is certainly no exception. We also look at a Shiraz Grenache blend from Western Australia and a Chardonnay from the Yarra Valley.

Wine Week 85: Something to keep the cold at bay.

August 15th, 2008

Down under right now most of the country is feeling the effects of a cold winter. How do you warm up when it’s under 10 degrees? A bottle of Tokay from Rutherglen might just be the perfect answer! We also look at a shiraz-grenache blend from a great Barossa producer. And to round things out we suggest a riesling from the Clare Valley which is one of Australia’s best, and which can handle some serious cellar time.

In this episode we recommend:

  • Glaetzer Wallace 2006 ($17-20)
  • Morris Liqueur tokay NV ($16-18)
  • Leo Buring Leonay Watervale 2008 ($35-40)

Wine Week 83: Something we’ve never done before

August 1st, 2008

This week we suggest a wine of a variety we haven’t covered in the entire time that WineWeek has been pouring rapid tips for you all. The unloved grape is grenache, and we explain why we’ve avoided it until now. We also look at an aged semillon that is affordable and comes from somewhere you might not expect. Our final wine this week is a pinot noir which is receiving a lot of attention at the moment for getting high 90s scores from the big name judges, but can be had for around $20.

In this episode we recommend:

  • Peter Lehmann Margaret Barossa semillon 2002 ($24-27)
  • Gramps grenache 2006 ($15-17)
  • Yering Station pinot noir 2006 ($20-25)

Wine Week 47: You may not know these wineries… yet.

November 16th, 2007

This week we check out three wines from producers that don’t have a big name in the market, but seem destined for bigger things. The first is a red blend from the Bendigo region which is available for just loose change. The second is a McLaren Vale shiraz-grenache that’s ideal for drinking right now. The final wine for this week is a great chardonnay from a region growing terrific versions of the variety.

In this episode we recommend:

  • Water Wheel Memsie 2006 ($8-12)
  • Paxton AAA shiraz grenache 2006 ($18-23)
  • Ashbrook Estate chardonnay 2005 ($23-28)

Wine Week 23: Tassie finally gets a go.

June 1st, 2007

At wine week we’ve looked at almost all the great wine regions of Australia, but Tasmania had missed out. This week we redress that oversight with a brilliant Chardonnay from the apple isle. We also check out a bargain red blend from the McLaren Vale and a Coonawarra red that isn’t necessarily what you’d expect.

In this episode we recommend:

  • Bay of Fires Chardonnay 2006 ($25-28)
  • d’Arenberg d’Arry’s Original 2004 ($15-20)
  • Zema Estate Shiraz 2004 ($20-26)

Wine Week 19: The best Aussie riesling is only how much?!

May 4th, 2007

This week we check out a contender for the title of Australia’s best riesling, and it’s one that won’t break the bank. We also check out a big Coonawarra red blend that is back in great form after a few disappointing vintages. And just to prove that age isn’t everything we check a out very young grenache/shiraz which is extremely drinkable right now.

In this episode we recommend:

  • Kalleske Clarry’s Red 2006 ($18-20)
  • Seppelt Drumborg Riesling 2006 ($25-30)
  • Wynns Coonawarra Estate Cab. Shiraz Merlot 2004 ($11-14)
