Recently on twitter we ended up debating which is Australia's finest white grape. Of course we were firmly in the Riesling camp, and with offering such as the Hardy's Siegersdorf offering such great quality drinking, and cellaring potential, at around $10 why wouldn't we?!

We also look at two other grapes that might cause a few arguments around your table. Danny recommends a Pennweight Gamay, a variety sometimes sneered at as being an also-ran to Pinot Noir.

Brad also looks at a Merlot blend from Dunsborough, certainly a grape that has less love since the release of the novel and movie Sideways.

Brad also looks at a Merlot blend from Dunsborough, certainly a grape that has less love since the release of the novel and movie Sideways.

This week’s recommendations are:

Hardy’s Siegersdorf Riesling 2009 ($10-15)

Pennyweight Gamay 2008 ($24-26)

Dunsborough Hills Merlot Cab. Sauv. 2008 ($20-$22)

Most weeks the wines we have on our desk are bottles that are full of wine. This week we're looking at bottle that we opened very recently, and haven't gotten around to replacing yet!

We look at one of Australia's best gamays, produced by Sorrenberg. Barry and Jan's very special winery is located in Beechworth at the foot of the Victorian High Country. Brad then recommends a McLaren Vale shiraz from Ingoldby. It's a great red at bargain prices which is ready to drink right now. To finish this week Danny looks at one of the best riesling's that Australia makes. The Leo Buring Leonay isn't just great now, as it will happily age for a decade and improve every year.

To round things out we look at a Fiano, an Italian white grape variety, which is being made in very small batches by one of our favourite smaller wineries, Oliver’s Taranga.

If you’re around Melbourne this weekend, why not drop out to the Shed Fest in the Yarra Valley? Support the small local wineries after the tough start to 2009 that saw bushfires destroy so much of the area. Details on ShedFest are available on the ShedFest website.

This week’s recommendations are:

Sorrenberg Cabernet 2005 ($38-40)

Roundstone Gamay 2008 ($20-15)

Oliver’s Taranga Fiano 2008 ($22-$24)
