Wine Week 219: Start, middle and end.

May 6th, 2011

Start with a white, continue with a red, finish with a sticky. It’s the classic night of wine drinking for many. So this week we follow the pattern and start with a Chardonnay from Oakridge, a producer from the Yarra Valley with big chatter about their whites right now.

We continue with onto a red, staying in the Yarra Valley. The Mac Forbes Cabernet impressed Brad with its style and polish. To end the episode we hook into a sticky, in this case a Rutherglen Muscat from local stalwarts Chambers.

This week’s recommendations are:

  • Oakridge Over the Shoulder Chardonnay 2010 ($18-$20)
  • Mac Forbes Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 ($21-25)
  • Chambers Rutherglen Muscat ($18-$20)

Wine Week 216: Hunting for great wine.

April 8th, 2011

To some the Hunter Valley is not the first place they think of when talking about great Australian wine. We’re not so parochial that we don’t recognise brilliant wine from Sydney’s closest wine hotspot, and this week check out two rippers from region.

The first is a new Shiraz from Andrew Thomas – the Motel Block, and the other is a bargain Semillon from Mount Pleasant which is too good not to drink. In between we catch up with an old Port style favourite from Rutherglen legends, Stanton & Killeen.

This week’s recommendations are:

  • Andrew Thomas Motel Block Shiraz 2009 ($48-$50)
  • Stanton & Killeen Vintage 2005 ($25-$28)
  • Mount Pleasant Elizabeth Semillon 2005 ($12-17)

Wine Week 182: A river runs through it.

July 23rd, 2010

The Barossa Valley is probably Australia’s best known wine region, and the river that runs through it has fame of its own. But Para is better know as the name of one of the country’s finest fortified wines more than it is as a river.

We also recommend an inexpensive Cabernet blend from Cookathama. We also change things up a bit with the Jaluka Chardonnay from Seppelt instead of bashing you over the head with yet another Riesling.

This week’s recommendations are:

  • Cookathama Cabernet Merlot 2007 ($15-$18)
  • Seppeltsfield Para Grand Tawny NV ($25-$32)
  • Seppelt Jaluka Chardonnay 2008 ($22-$26)

Wine Week 180: One of the best, one of the first.

July 9th, 2010

A bit more than three and a half years ago we featured a Jim Barry Watervale Riesling on the very first episode of WineWeek. 180 episodes in we look at the newest vintage of the very wine, and it’s still a ripper!

We also check out one of, if not the, best Pinot Noir’s from the Mornington Penninsula. The 2008 Yabby Lake is a brilliant drop, and worth every cent!

With it bitterly cold in the southern parts of Australia right now we finish up with a Rutherglen Muscat that is the perfect winter warmer from Stanton & Killeen.

This week’s recommendations are:

  • Yabby Lake Pinot Noir 2008 ($55-$60)
  • Jim Barry Watervale Riesling 2009 ($15-$20)
  • Stanton & Killeen Classic Rutherglen Muscat NV ($27-$30)

Wine Week 172: For the cool ones.

May 14th, 2010

Nobody wants their mates thinking they’re a goose. So we’re here to help you pick a wine that will make you seem savvy, smart and ahead of the game.

Your buddies will agree that you know how to spot a bargain when you crack the Barwang Shiraz, grown in the Hilltops region of New South Wales. If it’s a bit cool outside, you’ll be a big hit if you open a ‘Port’, and the Kalleske JMK is a winter warmer that will impress those looking for style and substance. Of course if you’re trying to show off for some wine snobs there are few better bottles than the Pewsey Vale Contours Riesling.

This week’s recommendations are:

  • Barwang Shiraz 2008 ($15-$20)
  • Kalleske JMK Shiraz VP 2008 ($21-$23)
  • Pewsey Vale Contours Riesling 2004 ($25-$29)

Wine Week Interview series: David Morris from Morris Wines

July 24th, 2009

Once again we’re not sitting behind our desk, but out and about and talking to winemakers in the second of four special episodes in our interview series.

Recorded live at the Good Food & Wine show in Melbourne, Danny chats to the David Morris from Morris Wines. Morris Wines are probably best know for their fortified wines, which have an unparalleled track record at the Rutherglen Wine Show – the toughest wine show in Australia for stickies due to being the home of so many of Australia finest fortified wine producers.

Wine Week 117: You’d have to be a bunny to ignore these bargains.

April 9th, 2009

This week’s episode features three wines that are ripper bargains. The first is a shiraz/cabernet blend from Western Australia that certainly doesn’t taste like a $10 wine. We follow this up with a sub $20 muscat which would match perfectly with the chocolate and hot cross buns this weekend. To round the bargains out we look at a Heathcote shiraz which is currently being discounted in a pricing war and is close to half the price you might expect to see it for normally.

Happy Easter to all our viewers!

Wine Week 86: Make sure you pack these for the camping trip.

August 22nd, 2008

It’s almost Labor Day in the US, a time when a lot of people head off camping. So this week we look at a fortified shiraz that is the perfect drop for late in the night around the campfire. We also check out a cabernet which can be had for an absolute bargain price considering how good it is. To round things out we look at a chardonnay regarded as one of the best in the country.

In this episode we recommend:

  • Kalleske J.M.K. shiraz VP 2006 ($23-25)
  • Mike Press cabernet sauvignon 2006 ($10-14)

Wine Week 85: Something to keep the cold at bay.

August 15th, 2008

Down under right now most of the country is feeling the effects of a cold winter. How do you warm up when it’s under 10 degrees? A bottle of Tokay from Rutherglen might just be the perfect answer! We also look at a shiraz-grenache blend from a great Barossa producer. And to round things out we suggest a riesling from the Clare Valley which is one of Australia’s best, and which can handle some serious cellar time.

In this episode we recommend:

  • Glaetzer Wallace 2006 ($17-20)
  • Morris Liqueur tokay NV ($16-18)
  • Leo Buring Leonay Watervale 2008 ($35-40)
