Some wines are made for special occasions. Some are so sweet or so powerful that one glass is enough. The three wines we look at this week are perfect examples of wines built for everyday drinking. The first is an Eden Valley riesling from one of Australia’s finest wineries. The second is a cabernet that comes in at a bargain price and provides great value for money. The last wine is a shiraz viognier blend from a McLaren Vale producer whose entire range is proving great drinking.

This week’s recommendations are:

Henschke Julius Eden Valley riesling 2008 ($23-25)

Barwang Cabernet Sauvignon 2006 ($13-18)

Wirra Wirra Catapult shiraz viognier 2006 ($20-25)

How can you help those affected by the Victorian bushfires?

Visit the Yarra Valley and give the businesses there your support by buying a snack, lunch, a beer or a wine.

Spend a little less on wine this week and donate the difference to the Red Cross Victorian Bushfire appeal

Buy a ticket to the massive wine raffle. With $25,000 worth of wine for 1st prize and 33 prizes total you really should be buying a ticket. Tickets available here, here and here to name just a few.

This week we look at two Cabernets, one from the Margaret River region, the other from the recently bushfire ravaged Yarra Valley. We kick off with a Semillon/Sauvignon Blanc blend from another Margaret River producer – one known best for their Cabernets as well! The first of our two Cabs is from the great 2005 vintage in the Yarra Valley, while the second teams up Merlot to create something really stylish.

This week’s recommendations are:

Moss Wood Ribbon Vale Semillon Sauvignon Blanc 2008 ($25-27)

Yering Station Cabernet Sauvignon 2005 ($20-24)

Fraser Gallop Cabernet Merlot 2007 ($16-25)

Last weekend saw a series of horrific fires around parts of Victoria, Australia. More than 180 lives have been lost and more than 1,000 homes. As well many wineries have been effected, with some losing everything. With this in mind we focus on a couple of wineries touched by the fires and tell you how you can support the rebuilding process. The first wine is a pinot noir, a classic Yarra Valley grape, from Punt Road. The second is a non-vintage sparkling from Domaine Chandon. Check below for how you can help those affected!

This week’s recommendations are:

Punt Road pinot noir 2006 ($19-25)

Domaine Chandon Brut NV ($18-23)
