Wine Week 196: The best starter this cup day.

October 29th, 2010

With the Melbourne Cup running this Tuesday there will be a lot of early kick-offs this week. So with that in mind we look at the perfect starter for your cup day celebrations. The Seppelt Original Sparkling Shiraz is the ideal wine to match up with bacon & eggs, and what could be more Aussie than that?

We also look at a half bottle Riesling from Clos Clare and a Cabernet from Pyrenees winery Taltarni.

This week’s recommendations are:

  • Seppelt Original Sparkling Shiraz 2006 ($19-24)
  • Clos Clare Riesling [375ml] 2009 ($15-$18)
  • Taltarni Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 ($36-40)

Wine Week 195: Good dog!

October 22nd, 2010

There aren’t many single varietal Mataro wines made in Australia, so when there’s a good one its worth talking about… even when the name might make you think twice.

We also check out the recent release from one of Coonawarra’s old school producers and a Yarra Valley Chardonnay that continues to impress for not many dollars.

This week’s recommendations are:

  • Toolangi Chardonnay 2008 ($20-22)
  • Bowen Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 ($22-25)
  • Teusner The Dog Strangler 2009 ($20-$25)

Wine Week 194: Spring? What Spring?

October 15th, 2010

Spring is supposed to be in the air, but all around Australia people are rugging up as a blast of chilly weather hits the sunburnt country. A Shiraz is a lovely drop when the weather is cold, so we check out two beauties this week.

The first is from Scotchmans Hill on the Bellarine Peninsula, a great wine with a definite sense of place. The second is the Pirathon Shiraz, a side project by one of our favourite winemakers; Troy Kalleske.

One thing is also certain is that a bit of bad weather won’t stop the races, so we get to grips with a new Non-Vintage sparkling from Blue Pyrenees in the form of the Luna.

This week’s recommendations are:

  • Scotchmans Hill Shiraz 2008 ($20-25)
  • Blue Pyrenees Luna NV ($18-20)
  • Pirathon by Kalleske Shiraz 2009 ($20-$23)

Wine Week 193: A weighty argument.

October 8th, 2010

Recently on twitter we ended up debating which is Australia’s finest white grape. Of course we were firmly in the Riesling camp, and with offering such as the Hardy’s Siegersdorf offering such great quality drinking, and cellaring potential, at around $10 why wouldn’t we?!

We also look at two other grapes that might cause a few arguments around your table. Danny recommends a Pennyweight Gamay, a variety sometimes sneered at as being an also-ran to Pinot Noir.

Brad also looks at a Merlot blend from Dunsborough, certainly a grape that has less love since the release of the novel and movie Sideways.

This week’s recommendations are:

  • Hardy’s Siegersdorf Riesling 2009 ($10-15)
  • Pennyweight Gamay 2008 ($24-26)
  • Dunsborough Hills Merlot Cab. Sauv. 2008 ($20-$22)

Wine Week 192: Around Rutherglen (and beyond).

October 1st, 2010

Last week Danny was up around Rutherglen. While the region is definitely best known for its stunning fortifieds and bold durifs, Danny brought back a couple of wines that break the mould.

The first is a rosé from Scion that’s bone dry despite being made from a grape more normally associated with sweet whites. Then there is the Stanton & Killeen Prince Reserva, a wine made for the table with grapes normally associated with Portuguese fortified wines.

In between Brad takes us over to the over side of Australia with a great value Shiraz from Xabregas in the Great Southern region of WA.

This week’s recommendations are:

  • Scion Vineyard Rosé 2010 ($18-20)
  • Xabregas Shiraz 2008 ($20-22)
  • Stanton & Killeen The Prince Reserva 2008 ($40-$45)
