Wine Week 191: Judging a book by its cover.

September 24th, 2010

You shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. Nor should you judge a wine by your first glance. This week we look at the Cape Mentelle Chardonnay. This wine has a recently redesigned label it’s been attracting a lot of negative comments, but we want to talk about the wine behind the label.

We also look at the Scarlett Runner Shiraz from Spring Seed Wine. With its label inspired by early 1900s seed packets it has a style all of its own.

And to round out the week we look at the Mac Forbes Yarra Valley Pinot Noir. It’s a wine that frightens some when they first pour it, being on the very light side for colour, but how does it taste?

This week’s recommendations are:

  • Cape Mentelle Chardonnay 2009 ($38-42)
  • Spring Seed Wine Co. Scarlett Runner Shiraz 2009 ($18-20)
  • Mac Forbes Yarra Valley Pinot Noir 2008 ($25-$28)

Wine Week 189: Recorking with Peter Gago.

September 10th, 2010

Every couple of years Penfolds allows people to bring in older bottles of their wine to be assessed by the winemakers. We took along a bottle of Bin 389 from 1987 for Peter Gago – chief winemaker for Penfolds – to open and evaluate. We also got a chance to talk with Peter about the stories behind the bottles they see at the clinics and why Penfolds hold them.

Wine Week 188: What’s the Story?

September 3rd, 2010

“Virtual wineries” are on the rise. One of the best of these is The Story. Sourcing grapes from the Grampians region in Victoria and making wine in the outer suburbs of Melbourne, the one thing that hasn’t changed from the old methods is that great wine is still the aim.

We also check out the Running With Bulls Tempranillo that comes in at bargain prices and wows with flavour and style. And to mark the beginning of spring down under we check out one of the very best Rosés, the Farr Rising Saignée.

This week’s recommendations are:

  • Running With Bulls Tempranillo 2009 ($18-20)
  • The Story Grampians Shiraz 2008 ($20-22)
  • Farr Rising Saignée 2009 ($25-$27)
