Wine Week 128: That Shaw is a good Chardonnay!

Not that long ago Chardonnay was all the rage. But winemakers started churning out wines that tasted more like oak than they did fruit. As a consequence, the wine public turned its nose up at the one time powerhouse white grape and looked elsewhere for a refreshing tipple. But things have changed! There’s now a “new style” of chardonnay, and loads of wineries are trying to mimic the style. But this week we look at the original, the chardonnay that started the revival – the Shaw and Smith M3. As well we also check out two more South Australian offerings. Both are shiraz, while one is from a well established producer in McLaren Vale, while the other is from a young winery. Both are rippers!

Recorded live at the Good Food & Wine show in Melbourne, Danny chats to Winemaker and Brand Ambassador Nick James-Martin from d’Arenberg. Nick talks about the d’Arry’s Original as well as the huge range of wines that d’Arenberg offer, including how they manage to keep all of the wines inexpensive and of top quality.

Wine Week 126: When I’m Sixty-Four.

Our first wine this week is celebrating its 64th consecutive vintage: The d’Arenberg d’Arry’s Original. And as you’d expect from a wine with this sort of history it’s a real beauty! We also check out the new vintage Pinot Noir from Hoddles Creek: A wine that’s helped to redefine what’s possible from inexpensive Yarra Valley Pinots. To round things out we look at an organically/biodynamically grown Riesling from Radford in the Eden Valley.

Are you a wine tragic?

Do you find yourself thinking more and more about wine? About its taste, its flavours? About bottles you have drunk? About bottles you own? About bottles you don’t but want to?

Perhaps you’ve caught the stares of friends and loved ones as you spend more time with a single glass of red than you do with the morning newspaper.

Or maybe you’ve found yourself mentally comparing wines to decide for yourself which review got the score right: 91 or 92 points?

Whatever the case, you might be a wine tragic. It’s time for you to take our quick quiz to find out just how for progressed along the line of wine tragics you’ve come.

1. On your phone there is:
a) The number for Dan Murphy’s or another big retail chain.
b) The number of a local specialist wine retailer.
c) The numbers of a few negociants, wineries and importers.
d) The mobile numbers of Robert Parker and James Halliday.

2. Your web browser favourites or bookmarks include:
a) http://wineweek.com.au

3. Your collection of previously drunk bottles include:

The Results…

Mostly A’s
You’re a wine drinker. Probably above Sir Les Patterson, but lacking in pretension none the less. You probably have a few bottles of wine lying around home, but mostly buy what you like and drink it soon after. Nothing wrong with that!

Mostly B’s
You’re on your way to being seriously addicted to wine. Your friends probably talk about your wine fetish behind your back – but at least they know you’re not an alcoholic because you savour the grape juice rather than just downing it like 2 buck chuck. You are desperate to find new, better wine each week – keep looking!

Mostly C’s
You are not so much a wine consumer as consumed by wine. It fills your every thought, and probably every spare space around your home. Chances are if you haven’t converted the shed or your first born’s bedroom into a dedicated, climate controlled cellar you’ve at least drawn up plans to do so. Seek professional help, and we don’t mean with a wine merchant.

Mostly D’s
Love doesn’t describe your relationship with wine. It’s so far beyond that. Every moment of every day is measured by the wine that accompanies it. If you don’t own a winery now, you’ve probably got an offer on one, or have just sold one. Remember though, the best way to make a small fortune with a winery is to start with a large fortune!

Wine Week 125: For bookworms and wine lovers.

We’ve recommended a few books over the last couple of years, but never one so well aimed at our audience as the Big Red Wine Book. Written for both wine lovers and the average Joe, this is a brilliant reference for anyone who loves a drop of the red stuff and can’t be bothered with pretentious wine writing. We also check out a couple of wines that rate highly in the book including a Tahbilk Cabernet and a Thorn-Clarke shiraz. Both great wines at great prices – and what more could you want from a wine or a wine recommendation?

This week’s recommendations are:

  • The Big Red Wine Book – by Campbell Mattinson and Gary Walsh ($25)
