Wine Week 119: Three ripper bargains under $13.

April 24th, 2009

Times are tough. Everyone is tightening their belts. So the big question is what wines can you grab this weekend that will be great drops, but not break the budget? We look at three great wines, with each just a touch over the ten dollar mark. The first is a red blend that’s very approachable despite its youthfulness. The second is a Semillion with five years bottle age that’s still a super bargain. The last is a Hunter shiraz from a producer making a real name for themselves.

Wine Week 118: Max Lake’s brilliant folly.

April 17th, 2009

This week saw the passing of one the biggest figures in Australia’s wine industry over the last 50 years, Max Lake. As a tribute we look at one of his wines, a 1998 Lake’s Folly cabernets. It’s a Bordeaux style blend grown under Max’s eye in a region where very few other winemakers could ever manage to grown the grapes required for the blend. We also look at a Sauvignon Blanc that aims to replicate the French more than the New Zealand style. And finally we check out a Shiraz and Pinot Noir blend that also draws inspiration from one of the great wine makers of Australia’s past.

Wine Week 117: You’d have to be a bunny to ignore these bargains.

April 9th, 2009

This week’s episode features three wines that are ripper bargains. The first is a shiraz/cabernet blend from Western Australia that certainly doesn’t taste like a $10 wine. We follow this up with a sub $20 muscat which would match perfectly with the chocolate and hot cross buns this weekend. To round the bargains out we look at a Heathcote shiraz which is currently being discounted in a pricing war and is close to half the price you might expect to see it for normally.

Happy Easter to all our viewers!

WineWeek 116: Matching fast food and wine.

April 3rd, 2009

Fast food, junk food, takeaway – no matter what you call it we’ve all been there. But just because fast food is an easy alternative to cooking doesn’t mean you can’t match it with wine to turn junk food into meal that’s a bit more grown up. This week we look at three wines that will go perfectly with pizza, a burger or fish and chips. A McLaren Vale sangiovese goes well with the Pizza, while a big bold shiraz from Rutherglen hits the spot with a burger. To finish things off we check out a riesling to go with the classic fish and chips!
