Wine Week 115: You’ve got to be in it to win(e) it!

March 27th, 2009

It’s that time of year again when the Aussie Rules football kicks off. And we’ve got a tipping comp that could win you half a dozen great wines from Kalleske. As well, of course, we look at three wines worth taking a punt on. We look at a white good enough for Brad to serve at his wedding last year. Our first red is a big, bold grenache from a producer in tip-top form. Our final wine is a lesser know producer kicking goals with top of the table Barossa fruit.

This week’s recommendations are:

  • Leeuwin Art Series riesling 2007 ($17-19)
  • d’Arenberg The Custodian 2006 ($17-20)
  • Laughing Jack Jack’s shiraz 2006 ($17-20)

Wine Week 114: More wines with great bang for your buck!

March 20th, 2009

This week we kick off by looking at another one of the new Penfolds Bin releases – a great GSM blend that is right on the money this vintage. We then look at a couple of genuine bargains – first up a cabernet sauvignon from the guys at Thorn Clarke who know all about value for money. Then we finish with one of the best value dessert wines going around – and it’s no surprise given it comes from the same stable as Noble One.

This week’s recommendations are:

  • Penfolds Bin 138 2007 ($24-34)
  • Thorn Clarke Sandpiper Cab Sauv 2006 ($14-15)
  • De Bortoli Deen Vat 5 Botrytis Semillon 2006 ($10-13)

Wine Week 113: Lucky for some… and congrats Danny and Jacqui again!

March 13th, 2009

This week we celebrate the birth of Danny and Jacqui’s second baby girl – so what better way than to drink some fantastic wines! Our first wine this week takes its name from some of the oldest shiraz vines in the world – found in our very own Barossa Valley. But unlike shiraz, our white this week is made from a variety that many viewers will not be familiar with – but it is incredible value from this producer every year. And we finish off with a favourite of ours – a Coonawarra cab sauv that can handle decades in the cellar.

This week’s recommendations are:

  • Two Hands Gnarly Dudes Shiraz 2007 ($23-27)
  • Tahbilk Marsanne 2008 ($13-15)
  • Jacob’s Creek St Hugo 2005 ($36-44)

Wine Week 112: Rubbish Bins? No way!

March 6th, 2009

It’s once again that time of year when the shops get their allocation of the new Penfolds Bin series releases. So this week we look at the one we feel is the best out of the entire range, one also known as the “Baby Grange”. We also check out a Clare Valley reisling that follows the “Bin” theme perfectly and a Barossa Valley shiraz that is stunning value for money.

This week’s recommendations are:

  • Leasingham Bin 7 riesling 2008 ($17-23)
  • Penfolds Bin 389 2006 ($44-60)
  • Teusner The Riebke shiraz 2007 ($16-20)
