Wine Week 107: Hot, Hot Hot. (And the winners are…)

January 30th, 2009

This week we announce the winners of our Best Dozen of 08 compeition. Of course as well as filling the cellars of two lucky WineWeek friends we offer up three wines perfect for the heatwave baking south-eastern Australia. The first is a sparkling shiraz. If you’re a big red drinker this is the perfect answer, just chill it down before popping the cork. The next wine is an Alace white blend from a producer who’s been making wine for more than 350 years! And our final wine of the week is a Rosé perfect for those 40C/100F days.

The two lucky winners of our “Best Dozen of ’08″ competition, who will receive a full dozen of the wines we picked as being the best of 2008 came from both our email subscribers, and our twitter followers. Congratulations to the two winners, Reneé and @Lilylauren!

This week’s recommendations are:

  • Banrock Station The Reserve Sparkling shiraz NV ($10-12)
  • Hugel ‘Gentil’ 2006 ($21-25)
  • Angoves grenache shiraz rosé 2008 ($13-15)

With all Aussies celebrating Australia Day this Monday we happily provide three wines that would be a great addition to any BBQ or party you’re throwing. The first is a single vineyard Canberra riesling that can be had now, or cellared for Australia Day 2020. The next is a Barossan red blend from a Young Gun of wine, while the last offering is a ‘drink-now’ styled shiraz also from the Barossa. And what could be more Aussie than drinking shiraz with your mates!?

This week’s recommendations are:

  • Helm Premium reisling 2008 ($32-35)
  • Spinifex Esprit 2006 ($25-30)

Wine Week 105: Gold medal bargains.

January 16th, 2009

How much would you expect to pay for an Australian Shiraz which won gold at one of the most well respected wine shows? How about under $10! The De Bortoli winery continues to impress across the range and this bargain red is certainly no exception. We also look at a Shiraz Grenache blend from Western Australia and a Chardonnay from the Yarra Valley.

This week’s recommendations are:

  • Cape Mentelle Marmaduke 2006 ($12-16)
  • De Bortoli Deen Vat 8 shiraz 2007 ($9-12)

Wine Week 104: A brand new year.

January 9th, 2009

2009 is here, and in our first episode for the new year we offer a couple of wine suggestions as well as a great wine book. If you’re late with a present, or maybe got some cash for Christmas then Campbell Mattinson’s book “Why the French hate us” is just what you need. Exploring the wine industry in Australia and written in a brilliantly entertainly style, this is a winner for the wine lover! Getting back into wine, we look at a Cabernet from a big Barossa Valley producer which is super value and a top end Semillon from the Hunter Valley.

This week’s recommendations are:

  • Campbell Mattinson’s “Why the French hate us” ($29)
  • Grant Burge Cameron Vale cabernet sauvignon 2006 ($18-20)
  • Tyrrell’s Vat 1 Hunter semillon 2002 ($40-46)
