Wine Week 27: Three bargain wines worth celebrating!

June 29th, 2007

As the end of the financial year is upon us, we thought it timely to present a couple of wines that wont break the budget, but will help you celebrate in style. First is a sparkling white with quality well above it’s price. Next we look at a great red blend from the Yarra Valley of a style growing in popularity. Finally we check out an inexpensive shiraz that’s both a good bet for cellaring and drinkable right now – what a combo!

In this episode we recommend:

  • Stephen John Blanc de Blanc NV ($14-15)
  • Yarra Burn Shiraz Viognier 2003 ($15-17)
  • Grant Burge Miamba Shiraz 2005 ($16-20)

It’s been too long between drinks here at Wine Week, but this week we finally get around to recommending another pinot and it’s an absolute cracker! We also check out a red blend which uses a classic pairing of grape varieties which comes from one of our favourite producers. To round things out we also suggest a classic Clare Valley riesling that’s sure to impress.

In this episode we recommend:

  • Farr Rising Geelong Pinot Noir 2005 ($30-33)
  • Tim Adams Riesling 2005 ($15-18)

Wine Week 24: What’s in a name?

June 8th, 2007

This week we look at three wines with very conspicuous names. We check out a bargain cab/merlot which is named after a local indigenous word for ‘fertile land’. We also recommend a big, bold Victorian shiraz with a name that brings Scotland to mind. And there’s also a Coonawarra Chardonnay whose brand name you should have no trouble remembering!

In this episode we recommend:

  • Brand’s of Coonawarra Chardonnay 2005 ($17-19)
  • Cookoothama Cabernet Merlot 2005 ($13-15)
  • Balgownie Estate Bendigo Shiraz 2004 ($27-30)

Wine Week 23: Tassie finally gets a go.

June 1st, 2007

At wine week we’ve looked at almost all the great wine regions of Australia, but Tasmania had missed out. This week we redress that oversight with a brilliant Chardonnay from the apple isle. We also check out a bargain red blend from the McLaren Vale and a Coonawarra red that isn’t necessarily what you’d expect.

In this episode we recommend:

  • Bay of Fires Chardonnay 2006 ($25-28)
  • d’Arenberg d’Arry’s Original 2004 ($15-20)
  • Zema Estate Shiraz 2004 ($20-26)
