Wine Week 6: White knocks off red for top spot

February 2nd, 2007
You may have noticed a pattern with our previous wine week episodes – apart from a champagne in our Christmas edition, all of the “premium” wines we’ve reviewed have been red wines. Well this week white wine lovers rejoice – we give top billing to one of Australia’s white wine treasures. Plus we also recommend two reds that punch well above their price point.

In this episode we recommend:

  • Penley Estate Phoenix Cabernet Sauvignon 2004 ($16-24)
  • Tyrrell’s Vat 1 Hunter Semillon 1999 ($39-45)
  • Seppelt Chalambar Shiraz 2004 ($19-27)

Download the video: (3 min 30 sec)
Windows Media (10.3 Mb) | Mpeg4 (10.7 Mb) | Ipod (14.4 Mb)

We’ve had a few queries about the price ranges we’ve been including - the range shows at one end the price you will find these wines at most discount liqour retailers (i.e. the lowest you can expect to pay “on the street”), up to what you will find the wine for at other retailers or bottle shops (which is generally closer to the RRP). We urge everyone to hunt around a little to find the best value retailer in their area – or alternatively look online – there are plenty of great online retailers offering terrific specials every week (a sample of which are linked from the right hand side of the website).

Cheers… and happy wine buying!

Guys, I understand 3.5 minutes is not a long time, but you seem to spend most of that time repeating the names of the wines, and talking about price. Both these things are written down on the site so it’s a bit of a waste of time. I would like to see more time spent actually describing the wines in tasting terms. At the moment it feels like a three and a half minute advert. Not sure is that is what you are aiming for, just what it felt like.

Fair point Michael – what we’re trying to achieve here in the short time span is more a recommendation of currently available wines, rather than a full description and tasting notes for each wine. We appreciate that many people in today’s world are short on time to research which wines receive good (independent) reviews, but that are also good value. So rather than do a “virtual wine tasting” we simply aim to recommend wines that are good value at a good price – hence the repetition of name and price – so that people who download the video to their computer/ipod/mobile phone before they hit the bottle shop have some inside tips on what to buy…

    cheers!

As a result of your review, I purchased the Penley Estate Phoenix 2004. Nice wine. Price was US$ 15.98. If you could review the Mollydooker Velvet Glove (gee.. only $175/btl), I’d love to know if it’s as good as I suspect…
