Wine Week 9: Something for the chardonnay set

February 23rd, 2007

This week we continue the trend of reviewing another grape variety that until now hasn’t appeared on Wine Week, with a chardonnay from a relative new-comer wining many friends for their great work. We also look at a warm climate shiraz from a vineyard with over 130 years experience and an inexpensive red blend that is getting great reviews from the critics.

In this episode we recommend:

  • Bailey’s of Glenrowan Shiraz 2004 ($17-22)
  • Leasingham Bastion Shiraz Cab. 2003 ($11-15)
  • Toolangi Estate Chardonnay 2004 ($34-39)

Wine Week 8: Did somebody say pinot?

February 16th, 2007

It’s been a long time coming, but we finally review a pinot noir in this week’s edition of Wine Week, and a damn good value one at that. We also look at one of Australia’s best examples of the fashionable shiraz viogner blend, and an easy drinking white wine that is perfect for those summer picnics.

In this episode we recommend:

  • Evans & Tate Margaret River Classic 2006 ($12-16)
  • D’Arenberg Laughing Magpie Shiraz Viogner 2005 ($28-34)
  • De Bortoli Yarra Valley Estate Pinot Noir 2005 ($22-26)

Wine Week 7: What a mouthful!

February 9th, 2007
This week we have a look at a great riesling that can be had for around $10, plus a big red blend that is a perfect mouthful both when drinking and when reading the label. We also look at a premium quality McLaren Vale shiraz that doesn’t require approval from your bank manager before purchase.

In this episode we recommend:

  • Peter Lehmann Barossa Riesling 2006 ($10-14)
  • Thorn Clarke Shotfire Ridge Quartage 2004 ($18-25)
  • Wolf Blass Grey Label McLaren Vale Shiraz 2004 ($28-38)

Wine Week 6: White knocks off red for top spot

February 2nd, 2007
You may have noticed a pattern with our previous wine week episodes – apart from a champagne in our Christmas edition, all of the “premium” wines we’ve reviewed have been red wines. Well this week white wine lovers rejoice – we give top billing to one of Australia’s white wine treasures. Plus we also recommend two reds that punch well above their price point.

In this episode we recommend:

  • Penley Estate Phoenix Cabernet Sauvignon 2004 ($16-24)
  • Tyrrell’s Vat 1 Hunter Semillon 1999 ($39-45)
  • Seppelt Chalambar Shiraz 2004 ($19-27)

We’ve had a few queries about the price ranges we’ve been including - the range shows at one end the price you will find these wines at most discount liqour retailers (i.e. the lowest you can expect to pay “on the street”), up to what you will find the wine for at other retailers or bottle shops (which is generally closer to the RRP). We urge everyone to hunt around a little to find the best value retailer in their area – or alternatively look online – there are plenty of great online retailers offering terrific specials every week (a sample of which are linked from the right hand side of the website).

Cheers… and happy wine buying!
